Giffinator

The Giffinator is an interactive photobooth that uses a green screen and custom animations to create gifs that can be uploaded directly to GIPHY.

It was conceptualized for the Weird Wedding in April 2018 and was also shown at PlayNYC at Terminal 5 in 2017 and Greenpoint Open Studios in 2018. The Giffinator box was designed and built by Mark Kleback. Dustin Long and Neil Sveri developed the software, and Chris Hernandez was part of the team that developed the custom animations.

The Cabinet

Rather than build a walk-in photobooth for the wedding, DBAA took a different approach with the Giffinator: a small box that could be placed on a table or pedestal and sit in front of the green screen. This allowed it to transport more easily than other cabinets, and gave us more control over lighting and focus.

Though we had planned to launch the Giffinator for the Weird Wedding, we wanted to do a test run in advance. PlayNYC in August of 2017 had a “games graffiti” section and invited us to show the photobooth.

Version one ran on Node.JS and used a webcam to take photos, chromakey the green screen, and upload the gif to GIPHY.
